Trends in Plastic Surgery for 2009

Results of the 2009 procedural survey are available from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, which provide some insight about the future of the industry and some trends we have seen during the past two years.

Cosmetic Trends and Changes

With the obvious growth in non-surgical cosmetic enhancement, the overall number of procedures performed by facial plastic surgeons increased considerably (47 percent). In 2009, facial surgeons performed more facelifts and laser skin resurfacing procedures and fewer lip augmentation and rhinoplasty procedures than in 2008.

Statistics on Race

Approximately 3 out of 4 surgeons surveyed said that cosmetic surgery would increase among ethnic populations. Asian Americans were said to be “somewhat more likely to have rhinoplasty in 2009 than in 2008.” Facelifts were most common among Caucasians, while Rhinoplasty was more prevalent among African Americans and Hispanics.

Statistics on Gender

For women under the age of 35, the most common facial procedures were rhinoplasty, Botox injections, hyaluronic acid, chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Those who underwent multiple facial procedures during one visit were 82 percent female.

218 procedures on average were performed on men in 2009. Men chose rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and facelift surgery most often. Surgeons also did an average of 64 Botox procedures on men. 43 percent of the surgeons surveyed reported seeing a trend of “men requesting cosmetic surgery to remain attractive to their partner or spouse.”
