Brow Lift

Brow lift surgery is intended to gently raise the tissues of the forehead and reduce the appearance of frown lines, heavy eyelids, and crow’s feet. Over time, a person’s brow can descend and lead to a tired, almost grumpy facial expression.

Plastic surgeons divide procedures of the face into 3 areas of focus: the upper, middle, and lower face/neck. The brow lift, which many surgeons consider the most important, is focused on the upper face and forehead.

Advantages of Brow Lift Surgery

The cosmetic improvements that can be achieved through this surgery are subtle, but often very beneficial. Signs of aging that appear around the forehead are often temporarily treated with Botox, but for a more comprehensive and long-lasting solution, the brow lift is an excellent choice for many patients.

Some of the conditions that commonly see improvement with this procedure include the following:

  • Lax upper eyelid skin
  • Wrinkles around the eye, i.e. crow’s feet
  • Drooping brow
  • Forehead lines/creases
  • Distorted brow shape

Brow Lift Surgery Techniques

There are several different techniques that can be utilized for this procedure. The most appropriate technique, and what Dr. Pfeifer chooses, will depend on the patient. The technique chosen can also determine whether general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is used.

One of the most common and effective methods is the endoscopic brow lift technique, which uses a surgical endoscope to view the underlying tissues. When possible, this technique is preferred for its reduced scarring and downtime. 4 small incisions are made behind the hairline, the tissues are raised, lifted and remodeled before sutures are placed to close the incisions.

Other brow lift techniques used by plastic surgeons include the following:

  • Coronal lift
  • Pretrichial lift
  • Midforehead lift
  • Internal browlift
  • Barbed suture lift

Each method has advantages and disadvantages and each is intended to lift the tissues that cause furrowing or drooping in the forehead.

After Brow Lift Surgery

A soft dressing may be applied to the treated area. If skin staples are used, they will be removed about 1 week after surgery. Dr. Pfeifer will provide post-operation instructions that should be closely followed.

Once the recovery process is over, the patient’s brow and upper face will be smoother and age-related imperfections such as frown lines and forehead creases will be significantly reduced.
