Chemical Peel

Chemical peels can be used to improve complexion and skin texture, while removing superficial skin imperfections. A variety of chemicals are available in varying strengths that, when applied to the skin, remove the outermost layers and stimulate the body’s natural healing response. The face, neck, and chest are the most common treatment areas.

Who can benefit from a chemical peel?

Photodamage, or sun damage, is the most common reason people undergo a chemical peel treatment. Sun exposure and the aging process are responsible for many of the skin imperfections people exhibit. Other problems that can be treated with a chemical peel are as follows:

  • Rough, dry skin
  • Acne and other blemishes
  • Uneven pigmentation/discoloration
  • Fine Lines

The Chemical Peel Process

The first step of a chemical peel treatment is choosing an appropriate solution for the patient. The following formulas and chemical solutions are some of the most popular types of chemical peels. At our New York plastic surgery offices, we carry several formulas to meet the needs of each patient, so contact us if you don’t see a particular type listed here and we can discuss more detailed options.

  • TCA - Trichloroacetic Acid
  • Salicylic acid
  • Glycolic acid
  • Phenol
  • Alpha-hydroxy acid
  • Pyruvic acid
  • Jessner’s solution

We begin the procedure by gently cleansing the skin, usually with alcohol and then acetone. With a cotton applicator, the chemical solution is evenly applied to the skin, which may sting a bit at first. The solution is allowed to penetrate for a period of time and then removed.

Chemical peel recovery & results

After a chemical peel, it is normal to experience some redness, flaking and crusting as the fresh new skin emerges. With certain peels, makeup can be applied almost immediately. Within about 1 week, you should be able to appreciate the cosmetic improvements in your skin. You should have smoother skin and a better complexion.
